Our Story

For 25 years, Mama Salome  the  founder and  Chairperson waited.

She tried everything. Hospitals. Treatments. Hope.
Nothing worked.

As a certified traditional herbalist (Tabibu wa Kienyeji), she turned to the forest—not out of desperation, but curiosity.

Working closely with the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) – Gede, Mama Salome began researching indigenous medicinal plants.

Over time, she discovered specific herbal remedies that helped her overcome infertility. The medicine was later approved by KEFRI.

Her personal healing became her calling.

Mama Salome asked a bigger question: What if other women didn’t have to suffer in silence the way I did?

That question gave birth to Ufanisi Conservation Group.

Together with fifty five (55) fellow community members, in 2005  she formed the group to conserve the environment, establish medicinal tree  nurseries, and sustainably produce herbal medicine for both humans and animals.

What started as healing became education—Ufanisi now runs a demonstration and training centre, teaching students, groups, and individuals about herbal medicine and conserving the Arabuko Sokoke Forest.

Today, local women earn income from herbal medicine, seedling sales, and training programs.

Healing people. Healing forests.
One story at a time.

The group is located in Mijomboni village about 4km off Gede town along Mombasa–Malindi highway.

Through KEFRI’s support the group was registered in 2006 with Arabuko Forest Adjacent Dwellers Association (ASAFADA).

The group’s main objective is to conserve the agro biodiversity through sustainable utilization of herbal plants, provide herbal treatment and generate income.

Our Impact so far

We have created  lasting impact in Mijomboni village, Kilifi County, Kenya by protecting indigenous trees while improving community health.

Led by Mama Salome, the members  depend on Kaya forest species to produce herbal medicines that treat conditions such as infertility, hypertension, diabetes, malaria, wounds, and animal diseases.

Beneficiaries like Naomi Katana testify to life-changing results after long medical struggles.

We have trained our members  to sustainably harvest, prepare, and apply herbal remedies, preserving ancestral knowledge.

By shifting from forest extraction to a trees-on-farm system, our group now manages about 20 acres of indigenous trees, reducing deforestation, mitigating climate change, and generating income through herbal medicine and traditional healing services.
